CGS-Geotechnical Info Net is pleased to feature the CGS 2016 awardees. In this issue, Dr. Jean Hutchinson, winner of the joint CGS Geohazards Committee, CGS Engineering Geology Division and Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists’ 2016 Robert Schuster Medal, is featured. Dr. Hutchison’s citation reads:
“This year, Dr. Jean Hutchinson is being honoured for her significant contribution to geohazards research, development and awareness in North America. She is a tireless and dedicated geohazards researcher and educator, initially at the University of Waterloo and for the past 16 years at Queen’s University where she is Professor and Head of the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering. Dr. Hutchinson is receiving this award in recognition of her many contributions to the identification and prevention of geohazards.
Dr. Hutchinson and her graduate students have been, and continue to be, at the cutting edge of new techniques and technologies for geohazards site investigation, in the development of better tools for characterizing rock masses for engineering design, both on the surface and underground, and on risk assessment and management for large slopes. In her role as an educator, Dr. Hutchinson has made significant contributions to the educational component of geohazards, established first-rate and high-quality graduate and undergraduate programs with a focus on geohazards, and has been a role model and a mentor to many.
The CGS Geohazards Committee and Engineering Geology Division and the AEG are pleased to recognize CGS member Dr. Jean Hutchinson with the 2016 Robert Schuster Medal.”
