          Design and Assessment of Mine Waste
        
        
          Structures. This comprehensive short
        
        
          course was comprised of five days of
        
        
          40 lecture hours and three tutorials on
        
        
          the design, construction, operation,
        
        
          monitoring, evaluation and safety of
        
        
          mining facilities. Eighty people partici-
        
        
          pated in the workshop—including dam
        
        
          engineers fromArgentina, Australia,
        
        
          Canada, the Dominican Republic, the
        
        
          United Kingdom and the United States.
        
        
          Internationally recognized experts,
        
        
          including Bill Chin, Richard Dawson,
        
        
          Don Hayley, Scott Martens, Gord
        
        
          McKenna, Norbert Morgenstern, June
        
        
          Pollard, Andy Robertson, Peter Rob-
        
        
          ertson, Dirk van Zyl, and Christina
        
        
          Winckler, were invited to deliver pre-
        
        
          sentations along with Nicholas Beier
        
        
          and G. Ward Wilson at the University
        
        
          of Alberta Geotechnical Centre. This
        
        
          year’s short course featured a presen-
        
        
          tation on the Alberta Energy Regula-
        
        
          tor’s new Dam Safety Directive by
        
        
          Javid Iqbal. A special industry panel,
        
        
          including Norm Eenkooren, Michel
        
        
          Julien, Georgia Lysay, and Scott Mar-
        
        
          tens, convened to discuss and compare
        
        
          leading dam safety practices from
        
        
          corporate management downward.
        
        
          We wish to thank all of the guest
        
        
          speakers and the participants who
        
        
          contributed to five days of intense
        
        
          learning and challenging discussions,
        
        
          demonstrating their commitment to
        
        
          excellence in tailings management and
        
        
          corporte governance. The University of
        
        
          Alberta Geotechnical Centre is pleased
        
        
          to continue offering short courses,
        
        
          conferences, and other educational
        
        
          outreach activities to increase profes-
        
        
          sional development and networking
        
        
          among students, researchers, practicing
