GeoSaskatoon 2023: Message from the Chair

September 2023

Greetings Fellow CGS Members,

On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, I would like to extend a cordial invitation for you to attend the 76th Annual Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) Conference to be held in Saskatoon, the “City of Bridges”, from October 1st to 4th, 2023.  This year, we have partnered with the International Association of Hydrogeologists-Canadian National Chapter (IAH-NAC) and the International Geosynthetics Society-North America (IGS-NA).  The theme of the Conference is “Bridging Infrastructure and Resources”.  We hope to illustrate how these three partnering groups contribute and interact when it comes to Infrastructure and Resources.

The Conference will be hosted at TCU Place in downtown Saskatoon.  Located on three levels, we will have significant space allotted to Exhibitors, spacious venues for the Technical Program (we anticipate having about 200 technical presentations) and an expansive Banquet room to accommodate attendees for lunches, dinner and social activities.

On the first day of the Conference, the RM Hardy Address and the RF Legget Award will be presented.    We have local cultural entertainment in place for the Awards Banquet, which falls on the first night of the Conference.  Following the Banquet, we will invite you all to attend the “Rock Show” sponsored by Geophysics GPR International Inc.  If you attended last year’s Rock Show in Calgary, please tell your colleagues at the Conference about your experience.  It will be a rocking good time!

On day two, the Geotechnical Colloquium/Student Graduate Paper and the Annual Business meeting are the highlights of the day. Upon completion of the second day of the Conference, you are invited to attend the Local Colour Night which will be held at “Boomtown” at the Western Development Museum.  Prepare to travel back in time to the year 1905 where the Boomtown Main Street will come alive with food, drinks and entertainment.

On the third day of the Conference, Dr. Del Fredlund will give us an historical overview of Geotechnical Engineering at the Heritage Luncheon.

The day before the Conference, there is an opportunity to attend Short Courses on geosynthetics; stability and deformation analysis; terrain analysis; and pipeline geotechnique.

On the day following the Conference, we have organized Technical Tours to Gardiner Dam, a local Potash mine, the Canadian Light Source and a Riverbank Instability Tour within the City of Saskatoon.

Please go to our website (www.geosaskatoon2023.ca) for more information and to register.

Hope to see you all in Saskatoon in October!  The Saskatoon Berry pie has been ordered.
