The 74th Canadian Geotechnical Conference & 14th Joint CGS/IAH-CNC Groundwater Conference was held September 26-29 in Niagara Falls, with some components offered virtually. The Local Organizing Committee, with Masoud Manzari acting as Chair, presented a successful conference with 450 in-person attendees and 175 virtual attendees. Thank you to all who attended and participated!
The LOC and the CGS-SOS would like to thank all conference sponsors and exhibitors for their support. In an uncertain and challenging year, it was exciting to be able to meet in-person once again to network and share ideas and knowledge. GeoNiagara 2021’s technical program included over 300 abstracts (IAH) and papers (CGS), with three full days of oral and poster presentations.
The Winter 2021 issue of Canadian Geotechnique – The CGS Magazine will include a wrap-up of conference events and happenings in the CGS News section, but we’ve included some of the conference highlights here. The RM Hardy Keynote Address was presented by Mark Diederichs; the 2021 CGS Colloquium was given by Renato Macciotta Pulisci; and the Graduate Student Presentation was presented by Megan McKellar. The Technical Committee planned three CGS Special Sessions: two Professional Practice and one Mining Geotechnique. Multiple networking events were organized, including the Young Professionals Networking Event on Sunday and the Women’s Networking Breakfast on Tuesday.
Although things were different this year, the CGS was grateful to have been able to host the conference in-person – thanks to all for your patience and understanding, and for making the 74th annual CGS conference one to remember!
The next CGS annual conference – GeoCalgary 2022 – will be held October 2-5, 2022, in Calgary, Alberta. Visit www.geocalgary2022.ca for more information; abstract submission is already open!
