Photographic Collections

This folder will contain collections of photographs, with captions, from well-documented major construction projects in Canada. Currently (March 2009), only one collection has been uploaded.

Projects in Northern Canada The photographs show early geotechnical activities in Northern Canada from 1952 to 1992. They come from the private collection of Dr. Branko Ladanyi, Ecole Polytechnique, Montreal.

Collapse of the Peace River Bridge, Taylor, British Columbia, 1957 In 1957, the north abutment of the Peace River Bridge was caught in a landslide which culminated in the collapse of the approach span and a side span. A short text by Stanley Thomson and David Cruden accompanies fourteen original photographs of the collapse.

The Failure (1913) and Righting of the Transcona Grain Elevator The elevator was designed using a bearing pressure that had been successful in local shallow footings. It failed in 1913 during first filling. It was subsequently righted and became one of the classic case studies used to support bearing capacity coefficients on clays.
