The next President-Elect for the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) will be appointed January 1, 2026, and this individual will become CGS President for 2027 and 2028. The process leading to this appointment, which will be confirmed at the 78th Canadian Geotechnical Conference to be held in Winnipeg, MB, September 21-25, 2025, has now commenced.
In accordance with the CGS By-Laws, a Nominating Committee was formed to propose a suitable candidate. The committee comprised Past President Rob Kenyon (who served as Chair of the Nominating Committee), Mario Ruel (previous President), Jocelyn Hayley (general member of CGS), Andrea Lougheed (general member of CGS), and Kshama Roy (general member of CGS).
The Nominating Committee has put forward the name of Dr. Jean Hutchinson. Jean Hutchinson has agreed to be a candidate, and her statement of qualifications and objectives for the Society will be published in the Summer 2025 issue of Canadian Geotechnique.
Jean has been an active member of the CGS for 38 years. She served on the board of the Canadian Foundation for Geotechnique for 8 years, including a term as President from 2022 to 2024. Jean is currently serving as Vice President Technical of CGS (2025 and 2026). Amongst her many volunteer activities, Jean co-chaired the GeoHazards 6 conference held in Kingston in 2014 and served terms as Chair of both the Rock Mechanics Division and the Engineering Geology Division. Jean also served as Division representative on the Executive Committee. She is an internationally recognized leader in Geological Engineering research and practice and has received awards from the Society for her professional achievements and service including the A.G. Stermac Award, the John A. Franklin Award, the Thomas Roy Award, and the Robert L Schuster Medal. Jean has been elected as a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and has received that Institute’s Canadian Pacific Railway Medal and John B. Stirling Medal. She is also an elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
While Dr. Jean Hutchinson is the candidate proposed by the Nominating Committee, other nominations are also welcomed. Any general member of the CGS may nominate a candidate for the position of President-Elect. Nominations must be received in writing by the CGS National Office by June 15, 2025 (execdir@cgs.ca). Nominations must include the printed names, signatures and membership numbers of at least eighteen (18) general members of CGS, and a statement by the nominated candidate expressing a willingness to serve as President-Elect and then President, if elected.
If there are no additional candidates, Dr. Jean Hutchinson will be acclaimed at the CGS Board of Directors meeting in Winnipeg this fall. In the event additional candidates are nominated, the selection of the President-Elect will be made by a general members’ ballot during the summer of 2025.
For further information on this matter, please contact the CGS Executive Director Ian Moore at the National Office (execdir@cgs.ca, or admin@cgs.ca).
