Derek Martin (University of Alberta) presented the RM Hardy Keynote Lecture, and Matt Lato (BGC Engineering) presented the 2018 CGS Colloquium. Kathy Kalenchuk (Mine Design Engineering) was selected to give the 2019 Colloquium at GeoSt.John’s 2019 next year.
All of the 2018 CGS award recipients will be listed and Legget Medal recipient Michel Aubertin will be featured in the December 2018 issue of CGS News in Geotechnical News. The 2018 CGS Division and Stermac awardees will be profiled in future issues of CGS E-news.
In this issue, the 2018 RM Hardy Lecturer, Derek Martin, is highlighted:
Dr. Martin started his career in 1972 and has over 40 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and the geohazards associated with tunnels, dams and landslides. In 1987 he joined AECL, where he directed the geomechanics research at the Underground Research Laboratory in southeastern Manitoba and was senior adviser to the Director of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. From 1995-1999 he served as Associate Director of the Geomechanics Research Centre at Laurentian University, working on the deep mining projects in the Sudbury basin. Since 2000, Dr. Martin has been a Professor in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Alberta where he holds an NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Railway Geomechanics. He served as ISRM Vice-President for North America between 2007-2011 and is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Engineering. His RM Hardy Lecture at GeoEdmonton 2018 was entitled “Ground hazards and Canadian railway operations.” His presentation was videotaped and will be added to the other RM Hardy Lectures in the members-only section of the CGS website.
