CGS E-news is pleased to profile the CGS award recipients recognized at the 2018 Awards Banquet. This issue features Laurence Bentley of the University of Calgary, who was presented with the 2018 Robert N. Farvolden Award. This joint CGS/IAH-CNC award was established in 2000 and is named to honour Dr. Farvolden (1928-1995) who is credited with beginning the modern era of hydrogeology in Canada in the 1960s. Larry’s citation reads:
“Over his storied career, Professor Larry Bentley has promoted a unique combination of expertise in exploration geophysics and quantitative hydrogeology – by pioneering research combining near-surface geophysics with hydrogeology.
For more than three decades, he has advanced our fundamental understanding of groundwater processes in a wide range of environments including alpine headwaters, boreal forests, prairies, and northern permafrost. He has also made important contributions to groundwater contaminant remediation and water resources evaluation.
Born and raised in southern California, he received his BSc degree in physics from Hamilton College and MSc in geophysics from the University of Hawaii, capping off his academic laurels with a PhD in civil engineering from Princeton University in 1990. The following year, Larry was hired to start a new hydrogeology program in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Calgary where, 27 years later, he remains active as a faculty professor.
For his life-long achievements in research and education, and unselfish contribution to Canadian hydrogeology, CGS and the IAH-CNC are pleased to recognize Laurence Bentley with the 2018 Robert N. Farvolden Award.”
