CGS E-news is pleased to profile the CGS award recipients recognized at the 2018 Awards Banquet. In this issue, Dr. Jean Pierre Tournier, winner of the 2018 G. Geoffrey Meyerhof Award of the CGS’s Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, is highlighted. Established in 1993, this award honours Professor Meyerhof (1916-2003), the first President of the CGS, for his outstanding life-long contributions to the profession and the CGS, and for his numerous achievements that have received worldwide recognition. Dr. Tournier’s citation reads:
“Recognized for his contributions to design and construction of infrastructure projects in hydroelectric developments, Dr. Jean Pierre Tournier has become synonymous with excellence in the field, both nationally and internationally.
Over his more than 35-year career, Dr. Tournier has made significant contributions to large dam construction at numerous Hydro Quebec projects, most notably La Grande Complex, Eastmain and Romaine 1-4, successfully spearheading the introduction and construction of asphalt core embankment dams in Canada. He has authored or co-authored more than fifty technical publications and is a former Associate Editor of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal. In 2007, Dr. Tournier was honoured as a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
On the international stage, he has served as the Canadian Representative and a Member of the Committee on "Materials for the Fill Dams" for the International Commission on Large Dams since 1998, taking on the chair position in 2010.
Jean-Pierre received his Ph.D. from the University of Sherbrooke and defended his thesis in front of Professor Meyerhof. And has now come full circle becoming a worthy recipient of the 2018 G. Geoffrey Meyerhof Award.”
