CGS-Geotechnical Info Net is pleased to feature the CGS 2016 Awardees. In this issue, Dr. Hesham El Naggar, winner of the 2016 Geosynthetics Award of the CGS Geosynthetics Division, is featured. Dr. El Naggar’s citation reads:
“Dr. M. Hesham El Naggar is being honoured with this award for his outstanding technical contribution on the lateral and seismic response of geosynthetic-reinforced pile foundation systems. This novel research, in which polymer strips are used to enhance pile foundations, was published in two benchmark publications, in 2014 and 2015, in the journal Geosynthetics International. Dr. El Naggar has expertise in several geotechnical fields. The prize awarded aims to highlight his innovative work on the strengthening of foundations using geosynthetics.
Dr. El Naggar is a Professor and the Associate Dean of Research at Western University (formerly University of Western Ontario), where he obtained his PhD after studying at Alexandria University in Egypt. Over his career, much of it with the Geotechnical Research Centre at Western, he has published 350 technical papers and book chapters on foundations, soil-structure interactions and geotechnical earthquake engineering, and has consulted on major projects throughout the world. He is also Associate Editor of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal. Dr. El Naggar has received a number of previous awards from the Canadian Geotechnical Society, the American Society for Civil Engineers, and Western University. In 2015, he was the recipient of the Engineering Research and Development Medal presented by Professional Engineers Ontario.
The Geosynthetics Division is pleased to recognize CGS member Dr. M. Hesham El Naggar with the 2016 CGS Geosynthetics Award.”
