December 6, 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the shooting tragedy at École Polytechnique in Montréal. As indicated on our social media platforms, there were various events organised in memoriam at the university, elsewhere in Montreal, and across Canada. A book Ce jour-là - parce qu'elles étaient des femmes, written by Josée Boileau, was published on December 6; it contains photos, descriptions, and testimonials. A gathering was held on the Mont Royal at 5 pm on December 6, where 14 light beams were illuminated to remember and honour the 14 young women whose lives were cut short 30 years ago. 14 additional universities from Vancouver, BC to Halifax, NS also took part in this tribute.
École Polytechnique has set up a December 6 Memory and Remembrance website – please click here to view.
There has certainly been progress made in the past 30 years, but there is still room for growth and change within our industry. The CGS aims to overcome current challenges and be a part of positive changes, and the inclusion and celebration of women in geotechnique.
