The following is information provided by the CGS UBC Student Chapter, after hosting its first ever Student Industry Night Mixer.
On the 19th of November, the UBC Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) Student Chapter hosted its first ever Student Industry Night Mixer. The event took place at UBC’s Vancouver campus on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. This also marked the inauguration of the club in its pilot year as a Student Chapter. The CGS Executive Committee initiated the formation of student chapters within universities in the summer of 2019. Seven universities in Canada took part in the pilot project, with UBC being one of them.
The event had over one-hundred attendees, bringing together students from Civil, Geological, and Mining Engineering, as well as local industry professionals and faculty members. It was a night dedicated towards creating connections between these students and experienced industry professionals. The program for the night featured presentations by the industry event sponsors based on this year’s theme of “New Horizons in Geotechnical Engineering”. Topics for the presentations ranged from the importance of critical state soil mechanics in design to a contractor’s perspective of the advances in geotechnical investigation techniques. Through these presentations, the sponsors also had the opportunity to highlight how their companies are adapting to the advances and changing dynamics in the practice of geotechnical engineering.
The mixer concluded with an address by local Vancouver Section Director and member of the CGS Executive Committee, Andrea Lougheed. She reiterated how the student chapter ties into achieving the mission of the CGS and how the CGS has continuously initiated and pursued efforts leading to the technical competence and excellence of Canadian geotechnical engineering and related geoscience professionals.
As the newly formed UBC CGS Student Chapter moves forward with their plans for the academic year, this event will be remembered as a key a stepping stone in its goal of fostering connections between students and the geotechnical engineering industry.
The CGS would like to recognize the hard work of the UBC Student Chapter for putting this initiative forward, and we are excited to learn of future Student Chapter activities across Canada.
