Bonjour/Hello friends and colleagues,
Last April, it was decided to postpone the in-person CGS GeoCalgary Conference to 2022. And despite the exceptional Covid-19 situation, the 73rd Annual CGS Conference is taking place with GeoVirtual 2020. If not done yet, you are invited to finalize your plans to virtually attend this online Conference on September 14-16. It’s a great opportunity to participate to this annual conference tradition, at a much lower cost and no travel requirement.
This unique CGS virtual conference will be professionally run with the same spirit as past CGS events. It will be in a similar format to what we are all used to, with prestigious keynote speakers, the opportunity to see the latest state-of-the-art developments from our top geoprofessionals and learn sound geotechnical practices from the best in our industry. Stay on top of your professional development, stay connected and, most importantly, have fun doing it together... virtually! Although we are all hoping that this will not be the new normal and that we can resume with an in-person conference in Niagara Falls in 2021, the local organizing committee (LOC) is determined to make the best of this year’s opportunity and bring all participants together. Co-Chairs of the LOC Justyna Kos-Fairless and Daniel Bertrand have been outstanding in their efforts to lead their team to embrace changes and organize this virtual conference, with the full support of the CGS Executive Committee.
These are extraordinary and challenging times. It is our profession to adapt to unpredictable and changing conditions imposed by Mother Nature. This is what we do. I am very pleased with the way we have responded to adverse conditions with innovation and resiliency. Despite the uncertainties, our membership remains strong and the CGS continues to provide good services to you, our members. Thanks for staying on board; we are indeed stronger together. I hope to meet you very soon in great numbers in GeoVirtual 2020!
- Mario Ruel, CGS President (2019-2020)
