The 73rd annual CGS conference was held… well everywhere! The GeoCalgary committee had to pivot to a virtual conference as the COVID-19 situation was worsening last spring. The local committee, led by co-chairs Justyna Kos-Fairless and Daniel Bertrand stayed committed and as a result, the conference was a huge success, with over 560 attendees. Congratulations to the team!
We would also like to thank our generous sponsors that allowed this conference to happen and not break the streak of the longest running annual geotechnical conference in the world! The conference had a strong technical program that included over 160 papers and some phenomenal keynote speakers. The R.M. Hardy Keynote Address was delivered on Monday by Dennis Becker of Golder, Ariane Locat of Université Laval presented the CGS Colloquium on Tuesday morning, and a special presentation by Norbert Morgenstern was held on Wednesday morning as part of the CGS Heritage Session. As per the tradition, the R.F. Legget Medal presentation, CGS Awards presentation, and the Annual Business Meeting were also part of the program. In addition, three special sessions were held over the three days of the conference: a panel on Women in Geotechnique, a networking and panel session for Young Professionals, as well as a Professional Practice Committee panel and discussion.
Although the conference this year had a different feel, it was an exciting event and a proof of our resilience and innovation, making GeoVirtual 2020 another well-attended and worthwhile CGS conference!
The next CGS Annual conference – GeoNiagara 2021 – will be held September 26-29, 2021 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. You will be able to visit www.geoniagara2021.ca for more information soon, and to submit your abstract before January 15, 2021.
