How do our design methods compare with those of other countries? Are we overdesigning? Under-designing? The International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) is teaming up with geotechnical groups around the world to conduct a survey of international practice. On November 20, 2020, a country-wide event will be hosted to kick start the Design Challenge - Canadian Edition. With design questions covering topics of shallow foundations, deep foundations, and slope stability, the event will feature informative lectures on each topic from Canadian geotechnical gurus as well as an overview of the data available and the design questions for the challenge.
Participants will be given four weeks to complete ten typical design questions using the codes and standards that we regularly use in design practice, and can submit no answers, some answers, or ten answers (those submitting ten answers will receive a prize!). Anyone can participate: students, young and senior engineers, even retired members of our community. This is an exciting opportunity to show the diverse experience and knowledge of Canadian geotechnical engineers, and with a virtual event delivery, anyone from across the country can attend. We look forward to seeing you at the ISSMGE Design Challenge – Canadian Edition!
