The following was submitted by Mario Ruel (CGS Past-President, 2019-2020) and Michel Aubertin (CGS Executive Director). The full text can be read in the Summer 2021 issue (No 2) of Canadian Geotechnique – The CGS Magazine.
The next President-Elect for the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) will be appointed January 1, 2022 and this member will become CGS President for 2023 and 2024. The process leading to this appointment, which will be confirmed at the 74th Canadian Geotechnical Conference (GeoNiagara 2021) to be held in Niagara Falls, Ontario, September 26 - 29 2021, was initiated a few months ago.
In accordance with the CGS By-Law, a Nominating Committee was formed to propose a suitable candidate. Chairing this Nominating Committee was Mario’s last duty as the CGS President (2019-2020). The committee also comprised Dharma Wijewickreme (Past-President 2017-2018), Doug Van Dine (Past-President 2015-2016), and Mark Tigchelaar (general member of CGS). The Nominating Committee has put forward the name of Rob Kenyon for the next President-Elect. Rob Kenyon has agreed to be a candidate; his statement of qualifications and objectives for the Society will be presented in the next issue of Canadian Geotechnique (Vol. 2, No 2, Summer 2021).
While R. Kenyon is the candidate proposed by the Nominating Committee, other nominations can also be submitted. Any general member of the CGS may nominate a candidate for the position of President-Elect. Nominations must be received in writing at the CGS National Office by June 30, 2021 (two weeks later than usual this year). Nominations must include the printed names, signatures, and membership numbers of at least eighteen (18) general members of CGS, and a statement by the nominated candidate expressing a willingness to serve as President-Elect and then President, if elected.
If there is no additional candidate, Rob Kenyon will be acclaimed at the CGS Board of Directors meeting and at the Annual CGS Business meeting in Niagara Falls in September 2021. In the event additional candidates are nominated, the selection of the President-Elect will be made by a general members’ ballot during the summer of 2021.
