In this and future issues of CGS-Geotechnical Info Net, 2016 CGS awardees are being featured. In this issue, Dr. Matthias Jakob, winner of the 2016 Thomas Roy Award of the CGS’s Engineering Geology Division, is highlighted. Matthias’ citation reads:
“Dr. Matthias Jakob is being honoured for pioneering, promoting and enhancing engineering geology concepts within Canada and internationally, primarily with respect to the practical application of risk management methods associated with debris flows, debris floods and flooding. Dr. Matthias Jakob was chosen this year to receive the award, in order to highlight his many achievements in the field of engineering geology.
In the 20 years since he obtained his PhD from the University of British Columbia, Dr. Jakob has been a rare example of a full-time consulting geoscientist who has also managed to achieve a world-wide reputation as an excellent researcher. He has consulted with EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd. and for the past 12 years with BGC Engineering Inc. Through his efforts, professional practice guidelines for landslides and flooding have been substantially improved in British Columbia, and are now being extended throughout western Canada and internationally. Dr. Jakob is the author of numerous well-cited publications and book chapters and is the co-editor of the 2005 text, Debris flow processes and related phenomena, for which he was awarded the Burwell Award of the Geological Society of America.
The Engineering Geology Division is pleased to recognize CGS member Dr. Matthias Jakob with the 2016 Thomas Roy Award.”
