I am pleased to be reporting on the past year of activity for the Society, thanks to the many volunteers who have been providing excellent support. I believe things have gone exceptionally well.
First, I want to congratulate our three CGS Vice-Presidents, Mamadou Fall, Justyna Kos-Fairless, and Andrea Lougheed, for steering the activities in each of their portfolios both skillfully and conscientiously. Mamadou, our VP Tech, manages the technical activities of the Society. In addition to overseeing the CGS Divisions and Committees in collaboration with Thomas Pabst, who is the Representative on the Executive Committee, Mamadou addressed the rescheduling issues arising from the Cross Canada Lecture Tour, monitored the progress of the various CGS Conferences, supported the first CGS National Online Geotechnical Lecture delivered by Doug Stead last month, and coordinated the ongoing work of the Co-Editors Ken Skaftfeld and Rob Kenyon to prepare the next edition of the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual.
Contracts have been signed this year with support from Andrea, our VP Finance, appointing Ken and Rob as Co-Editors, and arranging for Canadian Science Publishing to publish the manual. There are many important updates for the manual, and I believe members of the Society and many others will benefit considerably. Andrea is also actively involved with the overall CGS budget and the contractual and financial issues for the conferences. There are quite a few conferences being planned over the next few years. Of course, a major achievement this year was GeoNiagara and the return to our in-person Annual CGS Conference. This was possible because of the outstanding work of Masoud Manzari and the Local Organizing Committee, Lisa Reny and the Karma-Link team, and the many other volunteers who supported the conference.
Other new developments in the past year included guidelines developed by Justyna, our VP Communications and Membership Services. These focus on the management of both social media and use of National Office email accounts. Other communications activities included the Townhall meeting held online in June, and ongoing work of the Membership Committee chaired by David Wood.
My thanks to all members of the Executive Committee, that is the three VP’s, the YP Rep Vincent Castonguay, Local Sections Rep Billy Singh, and Division and Committee Rep Thomas Pabst, as well as Executive Director Michel Aubertin and the National Office team Lisa Reny, Emily Fournier, and Bill Reny. Special thanks to Billy and Vincent who are completing their terms on the Executive Committee this year.
In conclusion, I am looking forward to continuing our work together during the coming year and wish you all the best for the holiday season and the new year.
