The CGS Young Professional Committee and CGS Student Chapters are excited to announce the creation of the Canadian Geotechnical Student Competition. This student competition is the first of its kind in Canada and could become an annual event depending on its success. The competition is intended to showcase the skills of students and increase student involvement in geotechnical engineering and the CGS. The inaugural competition will take place on October 1, 2023, as part of GeoSaskatoon 2023 and will be hosted by the University of Saskatchewan. Teams of 3 or 4 students will test their design and construction skills to build small-scale mechanically stabilized earth walls. The walls will be loaded to failure and performance metrics will be assessed to crown the champion. A young geotechnical professional (under 10 years of experience) will randomly be assigned to each team to help with the process. The competition is open to both undergraduate (B.Sc.) and graduate (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) students. Signing up as a full team is highly encouraged. However, if a student wishes to participate but does not have a team from his/her university, the event organizers will try to accommodate those interested individuals in separate team(s). All the participants need to be physically present during the competition. The competition will feature networking opportunities between students and CGS members attending GeoSaskatoon 2023.
Students interested in obtaining the detailed competition rulebook and registering a team are encouraged to contact uscgs@ussu.ca. The CGS Young Professional Committee is looking for sponsors to host this event. Interested sponsors for the 2023 Canadian Geotechnical Student Competition can contact the Sponsorship Lead, Naveel Islam at naveel1@ualberta.ca or Committee Chair, Kshama Roy at kshama.roy@dnv.com.
